8 Habits: Intuition

The creative director thought it was funny.
The managing director…
The chairman…
The tea lady…
The client…
The client’s wife…
The client’s butcher…
Okay now, let’s research it to see if it’s funny.
One of the first things you notice after starting at Ogilvy is that everyone in the building is really really smart. Opinions may differ, but the bottom line is that with all of the experience and mental acuity the agency holds, a huge part of the job is trusting your intuition.
This even holds true for the Associates. While we may not have as much experience as many of our coworkers, smart ideas are always valued. It’s scary to jump off that cliff and put your opinion out there to be judged and dissected. But more often than not, if your intuition tells you that you have a truly great and dynamic idea, the best thing is to trust yourself. Sure, it may turn out the idea wasn’t exactly right, but the far greater tragedy would be to have a truly amazing idea and never pursue it at all.
